In the world of spirits, whisky is king. That’s not a claim, or an estimate, or an opinion. It’s a fact. The French may argue that some Cognacs are more complex than even the best Scotch. Some of our Russian cousins may argue that vodka is a pure spirit like no other. The English may point to the delicacies in some gins and many other nations could argue their own national drink is The Most Important In The World. They could all argue that, but they’d all be wrong.

No spirit other than whisky evokes such passion, such disagreement or such loyalty. None has as rich and at times, bizarre, a history. No other spirit commands such eye-watering prices. None has been written about more – in fact or in fiction – and we can’t recall any film called ‘Ouzo Galore’.

In Black Articles, we’ll be looking at whisky’s history, manufacture, global cultural impact, what it can tell us about ourselves and lots more besides. And of course, why it is the best spirit in the world.
